Uber on Thursday said it has deployed 500 e-rickshaws on its platform in Kolkata.
The vehicles, deployed across Howrah, Barasat and Madhyamgram in north Kolkata, Rajarhat and Salt Lake in east Kolkata, will offer riders sustainable mobility solutions to support their travel needs, especially short distance and last mile commutes, in the new normal.
Riders will be able to book the micromobility product on the Uber app from Thursday. The service will appear as âUber Totoâ alongside other familiar products like UberGo, Premier, Rentals, the ride hailing major said in a statement.
Earlier this month, the cab aggregator had deployed 100 e-rickshaws in Delhi across 26 Delhi Metro stations and had partnered with Yulu to launch a pilot offering riders smart and affordable micromobility options in Bengaluru in 2019.
As millions of Indians begin moving again, Uber aims to make urban commutes more affordable, efficient and eco-friendly, helping cities âBuild back betterâ. With multimodal service offerings like micromobility and public transit options, all in the Uber app, Kolkata residents too will be able to complete their journey seamlessly,” the statement said.
Uber said the launch is in line with the companyâs recently announced global commitment to make all rides on its platform 100% emission-free by 2040 through zero-emission vehicles and the integration of public transport and micromobility.
According to the 2019 IQAir rankings, 14 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India.
âWe are delighted to launch e-rickshaws on Uberâs platform as an efficient and eco-friendly mobility solution, which will offer riders convenient doorstep pickups, safe and contactless payments options, all at the touch of a button,â Uber general manager, east and south India, Subodh Sangwan said.
